Sweden Car Hire Destination Guide

Car hire is available in Sweden from the major car rental companies. In the summer the sun hardly sets in Sweden, especially in the far north where it does not set at all. This allows activity until late in the evening, or even through the night.

Sweden has a large number of lakes and forests, and it is very good for fishing and canoeing. There are several large lakes, including lakes Vättern and Vänern. Walking is quite a popular activity in the summer. There are no very high mountains in Sweden, so climbing is somewhat limited.

Sweden is visited most by tourists from its neighbouring countries Denmark, Norway and Finland. Thereafter follow tourists from Germany and the United Kingdom. A popular route for German tourists is to go by train from southern Sweden, through the European routes, up to Sweden's northern parts. Attractions along the way are historical, natural and cultural.

Driving in Sweden
If you’re planning to rent a car while in Sweden there’s some basic information you’re going to need to get you on your way. Firstly, and quite importantly if you’re British, get ready to drive on the right hand side of the road. That’s the wrong side if you’re British! This means you should always overtake on the left.

Sweden’s road network is extensive and well maintained, with toll-free motorways and thousands of picturesque roads in the countryside. Traffic jams and queues are rare.

Local Laws
You must drive with headlights on 24 hours a day. Also, it is obligatory to carry a warning triangle.

In Sweden seatbelts are compulsory front and rear. Children under 7 yr olds should be restrained in approved seat. It is illegal to use a back facing Child safety seat in a car that has a passenger side airbag.

Speed Limits
The common speed limits are 50 km/h (31mph) in built up areas, 90 km/h (56mph) out of town, and on motorways it’s 110 km/h (68mph).

Drink Driving
As with most other European countries drink driving is heavily frowned upon in Sweden but here the limit is extremely low (currently 20mg) which is way less than 1 average drink, so you should think very carefully before touching alcohol at all.

Parking
Parking restrictions are strict but clearly indicated. Most Swedish cities operate both metered on-street parking and timed ticket machines from 8am to 6pm. On street parking usually takes place on the right side of the road only.
